GOAL

To familiarize participants with the major areas and issues in treating patients with liver diseases in 2009 including fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and chronic viral hepatitis. Improvement in knowledge in these areas will facilitate delivery of quality healthcare to all of our patients.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The 5th Annual Hepatology Roundup will focus on topics in liver disease that are important to physicians and healthcare providers in Texas and in which there has been significant recent medical progress. This course is specifically designed for gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, physician assistants,  nurse practitioners and other healthcare workers who wish to learn more about recent advances in liver disease.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to have practical-based knowledge in the following areas:

1. Discuss the rapid rise of fatty liver disease and its implications for the general health of the patient, as well as for the risk of progressive liver disease.

2. Explore the rationale, mechanisms of action, and preliminary results with new direct acting antiviral agents in development for the management of Hepatitis C.

3. Identify best practices for the optimization of currently available antiviral agents and the avoidance of dose reductions.

4. Through the use of case studies, illustrate the role of cutting edge treatment options and guidelines for the patient

5. Review the current indications and contraindications of liver transplantation.

6. Outline the guidelines for monitoring and prospectively following the liver transplant recipient to improve their longevity and quality of life.

7.  Define the importance of Hepatitis B vaccination within at risk households and regular screening for liver cancer for those individuals.
