OVERVIEW

The 2012 Gastrointestinal Cancer Conference provides a forum for the assessment and increase of competency in diagnosis, treatment and management of gastrointestinal cancers.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This conference is specifically designed for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners interested in the prevention, screening, evaluation, and management of gastrointestinal cancers, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists.

OBJECTIVES

  • Analyze the current robotic technology available.

  • Compare outcomes - open vs. robotic pancreas surgery.

  • Identify different cystic lesions found in the pancreas.

  • Characterize role of EUS in evaluation of pancreatic cysts.

  • Interpret results of cyst fluid analysis.

  • Identify different surgical approaches to esophageal cancer.

  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of different surgical approaches.

  • Describe results of the MAGIC trial of perioperative chemotherapy.

  • Delineate the indications for perioperative chemotherapy in gastric cancer.

  • Define borderline resectable pancreatic cancer.

  • Discuss the importance of margin negative resection.

  • Discuss the utility of vascular resection in pancreas cancer.

  • Identify patients at risk for germline genetic mutations contributing to cancer formation.

  • Identify common genetic mutations in cancer.

  • Summarize screening strategies based on genetic mutations.

  • Identify patients who will benefit from adjuvant therapy.

  • Delineate current clinical trials for adjuvant therapy.
